“Katowice plays for Aleppo” event will be held in the city in early June. It will include theatre performances, a music marathon and a badminton festival. The local authorities plan to hold the fundraising drive as part of June 1 International Children’s Day celebrations.

The organizers have already raised over (PLN) 1.3 million (EUR 350,000), but they want to collect PLN 3.5 million (EUR 810,000).

The event is supported by the Roman-Catholic Church, the Evangelical-Augsburg Church in Katowice and the local authorities.

The city of Aleppo in Syria is suffering a humanitarian crisis due to the ongoing war in the country. Its citizens have limited access to water and electricity. There is not enough food, medicine, and a lack of sanitation and other basic necessities. About one million children live in the city, a third of whom are orphans who have no access to education. The event is initiated by a group of Franciscan friars, who plan to build a rehabilitation center for orphaned children in Aleppo. This facility will offer food, psychological support, educational activities and various forms of therapy. The project includes construction of the center and the purchase of solar batteries to power it. In addition it will fund the development of sports facilities and the purchase of two buses for transport.
