Neon signs route

Zawartość strony:
In the Polish People’s Republic (PRL) Katowice was regarded as Polish Las Vegas. At the end of the 1960s near - ly 800 neon signs illuminated the city streets. Many of them were designed on a grand scale, numerous were original and aesthetically sophisticated. Some of them covered almost entire façades, like that one on the Pedant department store at 3 Maja street. Some of them gave the impression of being mobile thanks to a sequence of lighting elements. The latter enjoyed particularly great popularity among Katowice residents and for many children an evening trip to the city centre was a considerable attraction, just due to the neon signs. The most liked ones included the Monkeys at 13, 3 Maja street, the neon sign of the Randia tea room with a cloud of steam raising above the pot, or the jumping Filipek at Stawowa street. A great return of light advertisements to Kato - wice, marked by a hundred of new and recon - structed neon signs, inspired the city authorities to create a route dedicated to them. In the very centre of the city there are display units, made specially for this purpose, where interested pe - ople can see a reconstruction of the former neon signs, the most beautiful and best known ones, archive photographs, and an outline of their history.

The Route of Murals - the city history in paintings

Obraz zestawienia:

Zawartość strony:

The street art fulfils many
functions in the city space. Murals presenting people historically
related to the city provide education and honour, they also honour
outstanding individuals for their work and activity. Graffiti or
inscriptions on the walls are a voice in the public debate, an
expression of opposition to or approval for the existing situation.
The street art is socially engaged, applies simple allegories and
blunt expressions. It frequently originates spontaneously, under the
effect of strong emotions. The street artist performances are, in a
way, tattoos on the urban tissue. large-size, extremely colourful
images moving art from galleries to streets allow to observe the city
rhythm, present its history and development over years. The works
inspired by the art of Waldemar Świerzy, an outstanding Polish
poster artist (a mural presenting John Baildon, the author: Camej,
the corner of Gliwicka and Bocheńskiego streets), by Jean Giraud’s
illustrations (a mural painted on the occasion of Intel Extreme
Masters games, the author: Mona Tusz, 53. 1 Maja street), or the
works of local Janów Group (Kutz on a pony, the author: Camej, 3,
Wypoczynkowa street) may be seen in Katowice streets. The first
examples of wall painting appeared in our city many years ago, but
only due to the committment of the artists, invited to participate in
the first edition of Katowice Street Art Festival, the city space was
filled with murals. Subsequent editions of this event, taking place
for a decade, has led to a trend of the street art in Katowice.
Because of the festival the capital of the Upper Silesia was visited
by e.g. Daniel Sparkes, Aryz, Escrif, Etam Crew, MCity, and many
others. Furthermore, a lot of projects - independent of the festival
- were launched.
