The Youth Palace was opened on 3 December 1951, and it has been a centre for extracurricular activities for children and teenagers with 19 different sections, including among others: physics & chemistry, mathematics & IT, biology & ecology education, drawing, painting, graphics & photography, reading, regional and civic education, sculpture, handicraft and stained glass, gymnastics, sailing, skiing, model making, history, linguistic and media classes. Other facilities include a library, swimming pool, a sport shooting range, fencing and judo studios, two exhibition halls, a concert and ballet hall, theatre and music rooms.
The renovation process of the entire building started in the first quarter of 2011 and the works were officially completed at the end of May 2014, and finally it has been fully refurbished.
In 2010 the building complex was listed in the Register of Historical Monuments with an "A" mark and the renovation was conducted under the supervision of the voivodeship's conservation officer.
All the works cost PLN 42,2 million, of which PLN 36,5 million were provided from the Katowice City budget. The remaining amount was financed by the European Union.
